Challenger Series lives up to its name in HB, CT qualification heats back up I 805 Post Show Day 1

A test of grit and a dash of luck proved the difference for the Challenger Series start at the Lexus US Open of Surfing Presented by Pacfico. Upests began early, starting with Yago Dominguez, alongside Justin Becret, besting Josh Kerr and eliminating the former CT icon. Another massive dismantling unfolded in the women’s Round of 48, Heat 1, with current Challenger Series No. 1 Francisca Veselko falling to Peru’s Daniella Rosas and Costa Rica’s perennial contender Leilani McGonagle. Top 5 moments included a breakout performance from former CT veteran Kolohe Andino in electric form. Reigning Olympic Gold Medalist Kauli Vaast took control in Round of 80 superheat to march toward top seeds, sending former event victor Julian Wilson packing. A buzzer-beater for Annette Gonzalez Jaxtabarri and fellow Basque Country contender Adur Amatriain delivering clutch performances. Closing out opening day of Challenger Series action, Sierra Kerr’s air-reverse took the nod for No. 1.
