#Windsurf VAN TOUR: WINDSURF DREAM TRIP
VAN TOUR: WINDSURF DREAM TRIP
For anyone considering converting their van for a dream windsurfing trip, this video from Claudio Silvestrin and Maria Tergliafera could be worth a watch! The story of their trip is also featured in our September 2020 edition.
“Welcome to our van tour! We are Maria from the US and Claudio from Germany but live in Barcelona, Spain. We converted a van into a cozy home, which allowed us to embark on a 6 month “slow-travel” trip around the Mediterranean Sea. We wanted to escape the 9-to-5 to do what we love: climbing and windsurfing. Our van is completely self-converted (except for the heating) and we had no prior experience. Due to our full-time jobs we could only work on it on weekends and the conversion took us 8 months. We chose our layout in order to have a very large bed that we can convert into a couch and to maximize storage. Let us know what you think of it!”

Tabou shaper Fabien Vollenweider and rider Anthony Ruenes talk us through the new 2021 Twister!
“Introducing a new generation of freestyle boards – the brand-new Twister sets a new standard in speed and pop. The extremely compact outline was updated with a narrower section at the back foot, which results in even more pop and top speed. The Twister motivates you to push your own limits even further and add extra rotations so that you’ll have tons of fun learning new moves and combos”

#Windsurf EIGHT THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LIAM DUNKERBECK
EIGHT THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LIAM DUNKERBECK
EIGHT THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LIAM DUNKERBECK
Written by: Matt Ogborn
Photos: Red Bull Content Pool
Liam Dunkerbeck has been riding waves since he was just three years old. Following in the footsteps of his dad Bjorn, a legend of windsurfing, he’s now carving out a name for himself in the sport too. Here are eight key the facts to know about him.
- Being in the water is all he’s ever known
Dunkerbeck was brought up in Gran Canaria, which is a Mecca for both water sports and aerial athletes because of the consistent wind all-year round. With dad Björn often out training, it wasn’t long before his son joined him in the sea.
He remembers: “Dad put me on a bodyboard when I was three and I started windsurfing from four or five. My father showed me how and I went from there. When you are that small, the windsurfing sail was too heavy for me at the start! I also did surfing, paddle boarding and skateboarding to improve my balance on another type of board.”
- He’s aiming for the very top
Dunkerbeck has excelled across each sporting discipline he’s competed in, so it’s no surprise he believes he can make an impression on the senior PWA World Tour circuit quickly, as well.
He reveals: “I will train hard to become a senior world champion. I have been training the whole summer for around four hours a day, pretty much every day. I think I am getting better and better with every session. I am 16 and I will make this my career, but I also need to have something as a back-up in case something happens, which is why I will continue at school for the next two years.”
- Winning comes naturally to him
The young Spaniard has been winning junior titles across various U12, U14, U16 and now U17 categories. Despite having many options, the future is firmly on windsurfing.
Dunkerbeck said: “Last year I started competing professionally when I was 15. I was doing surfing, slalom, speed and wave, but it was way too much. From January 2020, my focus was on windsurfing, and specifically wave sailing. This year I was going to do the whole tour with the professionals, but I was not able.”
- His famous father is an inspiration, not an added pressure
When your father is such a huge pioneer of the sport you’ve chosen to compete in, some could see that as a weight on the shoulders, but Dunkerbeck uses it more as motivation.
“My dad is an inspiration. He knows exactly what to do in the perfect moment and that is cool,” Dunkerbeck says. “The main advice he has given me is not to forget everything we have done before. All the important steps that we did when I was learning with him are still crucial.”
- He has many idols.
Watersports, such as wave sailing and foiling, are growing at a fast rate around the world with Dunkerbeck drawing inspiration from many other top wave athletes.
He reveals: “For windsurfing, it is Philip Koester. He is super good in strong conditions. He has the best jumping on the whole tour. He actually lives here in Gran Canaria, so I see every day what he does in the water and it helps for my own skills. It definitely helps, that is for sure. Kai Lenny is also an idol, because he can do everything!”
- Dunkerbeck & Dunkerbeck at the same tournaments?
It’s not often that a parent and child can compete in the same events during their careers, however Liam is excited that 2021 could see him lining up with Björn, albeit in different categories.
“He mainly competes in Speed, while I mainly compete in Wave,” Dunkerbeck says. “Next year when I go to every wave event, technically he can race in the over-50s and professionals in Speed, and I can race in the juniors and professionals in Wave. We will see!”
- His life revolves around wind.
Dunkerbeck is lucky that he has the family business at his disposal for regular training with legends such as Björn and Köster alongside him on the water so he can pick their brains.
“In Gran Canaria, we have wind almost every day. If you don’t have wind in one place, you have it another. In winter, we have good wind in front of the Dunkerbeck Windsurf Center at Playa del Aguila beach as we have wind from the east and it is very nice with all-round conditions.”
- He started the season well.
2020 has been frustrating, but Liam delivered on the chance to compete when he won the U17 Noerstick, Cold Hawaii, PWA Youth Wave World Cup stop at Denmark in September.
On the victory, he said: “It was exciting because the whole world had been in quarantine and we didn’t have that much time to train. We only had one event, so it was super nice that I won it.”

ION: 2021 CORE BOARDBAGS
ION continue their ‘Save our playgrounds’ initiative with this news about the new 2021 generation of ION’s CORE boardbags which have been developed in cooperation with Waste2Wear® the leading producer of innovative fabrics and textile products, made from recycled plastics since 2008.
ION say ‘The yarn of the new CORE boardbags consists of 100% RPET nylon, which is obtained from recycled plastic bottles. Used plastic bottles are collected and thoroughly cleaned, before being shredded into small flakes and further processed into larger pellets, which are then made into thin yarn’
By using recycled fabrics on all Core boardbags we achieved enormous environmental savings in the production.
“The global plastic facts are terrifying. In 2018 about 359 million tons of plastic were produced. That is more than the weight of the entire humanity on earth. Every 10-12 years plastic production doubles while only 13% is currently recycled.*ION sees it as a responsibility to minimize the ecological footprint and takes action in all business areas. ION contributes to this overall mission by processing material waste, reducing printing materials and extending the entire product life cycle by developing high-quality accessories designed for long-term use.For the all-new Core Boardbag collection ION partnered up with Waste2Wear. The result is that all board bags on Core level feature recycled materials from season SS21 on.”
Environmental Savings (All ION Core Bags 2021) by using Waste2Wear yarn:
- Water used by a human in 4.4 years*
- CO2 absorbed by a tree in 1279 years*
- Energy a light bulb needs to run for 225 years*
- Bottles to fill 3.097 shipping containers*

#Windsurf RRD FIRE 7.6 2020 TEST REVIEW
RRD FIRE 7.6 2020 TEST REVIEW
RRD FIRE 7.6 2020 TEST REVIEW
THE VERDICT
The Fire has changed focus slightly for 2020, maturing into a truly adaptable workhorse. From light wind freeride cruising to high-end blasting, it is equally happy fulfilling a number of roles across a wide tuneable wind range.
OVERVIEW
The Fire is in RRD’s Y25 range as their ‘Performance Freeride’ model, offering a wide base of nine sizes from 5.0m to 9.0m. The brief and focus of each size evolves though the series, from bump and jump in the smaller sizes right through to a twin-cam in the three largest sizes. This 7.6m is the largest no-cam option, fashioned with seven battens (many of which are tubed), a negative leech outline, double clew eyelets and reduced head size – all measures to improve handling and top end control. Rigged here on a Dynamic Pro Comp SDM (whilst still compatible with an RDM), it is easy to tune thanks to the marker in the top panel, (dubbed their “integrated trim system”) which helps to achieve the right amount of tension prescribed by RRD’s sail designer John Skye. And with a luff of 482 cm, it is certainly a tall sail, its size accentuated by the long boom length and concave leech outline. Displaying a moderate amount of luff curve amongst its peers, the Fire possesses a good amount of depth to its profile at rest, with all four lower battens exhibiting rotation around the mast. Sporting x-ply in the luff and clew panels, the rest of the Fire’s body is fabricated in monofilm, with a clean set and visually striking in its 25-year anniversary colours. Alternatively you can opt for the more monochrome orange livery.
BRAND CLAIM
“The ultimate in performance freeride … Lots of low end juice to get you up and moving quickly and plenty of control at the top end to hit top speeds with the GPS. This really is the perfect freeride solution.”
PERFORMANCE
We’ve had the chance to test the Fire’s iterations over several seasons now and have been impressed in how it has evolved. This year marks the biggest change in the series, no longer simply a no-cam performance range, but an extended line of sails whose structure alters through the sizes. Nevertheless, in this size, the remit for the Fire remains very much in line with the heritage set out by its predecessors. Bold and full-bodied in the hands from the off, this 7.6m possesses the largest dimensions of all the sails in the test group and develops the bottom end power to justify its form. As the pressure builds, the Fire pulls positively, its centre of effort locked firmly, yet positioned a little further back and focussed around the rider. As a result the power is tangible through both hands, giving the Fire a really balanced and comfortable nature. Using the upper clew eyelet to maximise the feedback supplied, the Fire’s power delivery is smooth and fluid, bestowing the sail with an alert yet accessible character. Applicable for the intermediate rider, it can partner the progressive freeride platform admirably, covering distance easily and powering consistently through varying winds and on all points of sail. As the wind increases, the Fire can be tuned with more tension to explore its freerace credentials – the side of this new Fire’s personality that is undoubtedly derived from its legacy. As the wind increases, the Fire comes alive, actively accelerating in gusts and generating the lift to help fly the board on its fin. The extra clew eyelet is an added bonus, encouraging a more compressed stance and enhancing its sense of control. It may not be as potent as some here in its top end performance, but what it loses in drag-racing efficacy, it more than makes up for with its newfound versatility. And whilst the size of the Fire is not lost in transition, the battens rotate tidily onto the new side, the power returning in a flowing predictable manner.

Balz Müller is known for taking foiling to new levels; here he tells us of his latest escapade in the Swiss Alps – foiling high altitude waters in freezing low temperatures!

ICE CHASE
As a windsurfing pro you are constantly chasing summer. But this year, typically Swiss, I went skiing instead in the Alps at the famous summer foil windsurfing paradise of Silvaplana. During the first gondola ride up to Corvatsch, Silvaplana’s local mountain, I cheerfully discovered a small pool had formed in a frozen lake, created by a wild mountain creek. It was a no-brainer as soon as I saw it, I needed to swap my snowboard for a foil board, the challenge to sail it was on! Luckily I had all my windsurf equipment with me in my van; all I needed now was some wind!
A few days later a stormy north wind started to blow, shutting down the ski lifts but giving me the green light to go sail. The mission was on! So I walked to the lake in my wetsuit and rigged my equipment full of excitement. The nature around the lake was mystically beautiful; this was going to be a session to remember one way or another! After only a few seconds on the water though I realized that this was not an easy task. The boom froze instantly and always wanted to slip through my hands. The sail became a stiff, heavy object; it felt almost impossible to pump it. On top of that, the water on the frozen lake was unreadable. The only way to see the gusts was by looking for blown along snow and by the time I had spotted the snow the gust had usually already pushed me abruptly into the water! One gust of wind threw me off my foil flight path and directly onto the ice, which I then fell through, ending up under the sail. It is truly a nightmare to swim under frozen water. Up to this point I never thought it would ever be too cold for a windsurfing session, but sailing in temperatures below zero degrees Celsius taught me a valuable lesson – I need a heated boom!
