3x World Champ Gabriel Medina // Best Of Gabriel Medina So Far This Year
Meet Brazil's Magician Gabriel Medina. Relive every excellent score Medina has laid down through the first 8 stops on the 2024 WSL Championship Tour ahead of Fiji. #wsl One of Brazil’s most promising groms in the early 00s, Gabriel Medina began his meteoric rise to the top as barely a teenager. In the final of the 2009 Quiksilver Pro King of the Groms against Caio Ibelli, Gabe dropped two tens and a perfect heat total to win the event and make a very big statement to the generation of supergroms assembled at the event, like Jack Robinson, Kanoa Igarashi, and others. While Gabe was always going to be a technical genius in small waves, his fearlessness and precision at some of the tour’s heaviest waves like Teahupoo or Pipeline is the result of relentless work to get better, stronger, and more comfortable in waves of consequence. Gabe won the Tahiti Pro in 2014 for the first time against the winningest surfer ever at Teahupo’o, Kelly Slater. The then twenty-one-year-old established himself with the performance as one of his generation’s most gifted all conditions surfers, and smoothly paved the way to his first World Title that year. The three-time WSL World Champion has been a perennially consistent standout at Teahupoo ever since, winning the event again in 2018, and making four runner-up finishes in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2023. Gerry Lopez & Peter McCabe Talk Untold G-Land Stories, Pioneering Mythical Waves | The Lineup
Elder Gods, surfing icons, and early pioneers of the mythical Grajagan, Gerry Lopez and Peter McCabe join us on The Lineup! Gerry and Peter reminisce on their extended trips to Indonesia that earned them international reputation and fame for their tube riding, crossover surfing, and fearlessness at its virtually perfect waves. They reveal untold stories from East Java, their earliest memories of surfing G-Land, and becoming regulars at the world’s first surf camp there developed by Mike Boyum, G-Land Surf Camp. They discuss surfing for eight to ten hours at a time and eating one meal a day, only after finally coming in from a surf. They reflect on their best memories performing “Blue Angels,” what they called their surfing when they performed crossovers and rode in the tube without ever colliding with each other as they surfed the same wave. They look back on Peter’s history, how he got his start and his competitive stint in surfing, and their appearances in various films throughout their career. They wrap up the conversation astonished by the caliber of surfing today, amazed by its progression since they started, answering listener questions, and giving Peter his first go with the Lightning Round. Jakob Nowell Talks Sublime, Father's Legacy, Carving Own Path + New Single | COLD BEER SURF CLUB
Sublime frontman, musician, and son of the late and legendary Bradley Nowell, Jakob Nowell, joins the 805 Cold Beer Surf Club. Conner and Jakob talk about growing up in Long Beach and O’ahu, and how his upbringing inspired his music. He reflects on his father’s legacy with Sublime and the responsibility he feels to honor him as the new frontman of the legendary and beloved So Cal band. He describes performing in front of the biggest crowd he’s ever done at Coachella, their new hit single “Feel Like That,” and looking forward to performing at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. He discusses the duty he feels to Eric and Bud as the original members of the band to carry the torch despite originally not wanting to go down this path with Sublime. He talks about the serendipitous moment when he decided to be the band’s frontman and how the stories of Sublime’s visceral impact to their fans inspire him to do so. He details the struggles of being sober in the decadence of the music industry, juggling his own band Jakobs Castle, the release of their debut album ENTER: THE CASTLE, and how music is the healing he and the people need from generational trauma and pain. He explains how Eric, Bud, and Fletcher Dragge from Pennywise have mentored him in this industry and also pours one (water) out on the Cold Beer Surf Club rub in memory of a late teacher who truly inspired him. Meet France’s Johanne Defay // Best Of
France’s Johanne Defay first learned to surf on Reunion Island, France’s other idyllic, tropical surf destination, albeit in the Indian Ocean. Competing since before she was a teen, Johanne cut her teeth surfing in European amateur events, before turning her attention to qualify for the Championship Tour. Growing up surfing a left reef pass, a reef considered one of the best in the world; supplied an influential role in shaping Johanne’s powerful and explosive surfing as well as her backside tuberiding approach. An approach evident in the locations at which she’s won major Championship Tour events: Uluwatu, Cloudbreak, and G-Land, all hollow left reef passes. Along with teammate Vahiné Fierro, going into the 2024 Games, Johanne will be a fan favorite for the Olympic’s host nation this year, and more than capable of taking the event out. #OlympicSurfing Subscribe to the WSL for more action: https://goo.gl/VllRuj Watch all the latest surfing action of the world's best surfers in the world's best waves. The Moroccan Southpaw - Ramzi Boukhiam // Best Of
Raised on the ripple North African right points in and around Taghazout Bay, Moroccan goofy foot Ramzi Boukhiam possesses one of the most powerful, precise, and enviable backhand approaches of any surfer on the planet. The first Moroccan to qualify for the World Championship Tour, Ramzi is a shining example of the warmth and openness for which the country is known. But don’t let his pearly whites and perpetually positive disposition fool you—he’s an all-conditions killer, as evidenced in his semifinal finish at the 2024 SHISEIDO Pro Tahiti. #WSL Subscribe to the WSL for more action: https://goo.gl/VllRuj Watch all the latest surfing action of the world's best surfers in the world's best waves. At waves like Teahupo’o, there’s no compensating for experience. #Paris2024Surfing
Local knowledge. At waves like Teahupo’o, there’s no compensating for experience. Few surfers in the world are as intimately familiar with Teahupo’o many-faces and deceptively complicated perfection as Tahiti’s Kauli Vaast.Getting his first sessions at the End of the Road as barely a teenager, he was taken under the wing and guided by heavies like Matahi and Manoa Drollet, Vetea “Poto” David, Michel Bourez, Tereva David, and others. Kauli made his intentions clear with his runner-up performance as the Local Wildcard at Teahupo’o in 2023; followed by locking in his spot for his country last year at the ISA Games in El Salvador.
