ODA BRODHOLT: ARUBA QUARANTINE

When Oda Brodhalt headed out to Aruba in March for some winter training alongside Sarah Quita Offringa she had no idea she would end up in quarantine. When lock down and travel restrictions started accelerating she decided her safest course of action was to stay put in Aruba, with the added bonus that she would be able to stay and train with her best friend and the freestyle world champion SQ! We caught up with Oda to find out how she has been coping with the Aruba quarantine as well as living 24/7 with Sarah Quita!

WS: We saw you are in Aruba right now with Sarah Quita, did you get stuck there or did you choose to stay?

OB: I left Norway when it was snowy and cold! Landed on windy Aruba, sunny and warm! After two weeks the Corona situation got wild. I could not imagine they would close the airport for months as the island needs tourists. But at the same time, I could stay at Sarah´s house and train with her. I decided if it would last some months, I knew I would be at the best windy place and also train with the best! So, I decided to stay and did not try to hurry home. The wind has been epic and I feel I am in the right place. I do miss my family, friends and boyfriend a lot, but they all supported me in my decision to stay here. We facetime a lot and soon we will all be reunited!

WS: What is it like hanging out with Sarah 24/7?

OB: You can call it a 24/7 entertainment! She is the most positive and funny person I know and we laugh so much. I stopped training my abs as they would be over-trained due to all the laughing! We have a trend to hype each other up and motivate each other. When we go on trips to do our “training camps” with freestyle, foil, slalom, wave, kite, tennis, CrossFit, running and wrestling, 2-3 sessions a day with different sports. I have more energy as I have a Sarah buddy that is always up for doing things. I think the reason is that we have so many similar hobbies and can match each other.

In windsurfing, I am super lucky to sail with her every day. She is the world number 1, so the only thing I can do it to try and hang in there and step up my game. Only thing is that she is also stepping up her game even more! I am sure she is the best overall skilled windsurfer on the planet and everything she puts her mind in to – she goes all in! I also go ‘ALL IN’ when I get motivated, so we are a great match!  I spent more time with her for the last 12 months than I have even spent with anyone. Sometimes I feel we are having too much fun doing all the things we do when someone else maybe would call it hard work because they have to do it all by themselves. It´s like running…it´s hard alone, but more fun together pushing each other.

WS: How many coffees do you two drink a day?

OB: I think Sarah is at 3 coffee´s a day, some days 4-5 (but that is too much for her!) True story is that I really like the fact of having “Coffee time” but I don´t even drink real coffee! So, I always order a Latte with half a shot! But last week I did my first 2 single shot latte´s! Came home to the house pretty proud, before Sarah´s mom told me: “Oda – don´t get addicted to coffee, Sarah is taking you down the wrong path!” Well, let´s just say the day after I went back to the half-shot latte or just a cup of tea! Her mum, Esther is a smart woman and I will take her advice!

WS: Seems like you two are best friends, what will happen when you compete against each other?

OB: I think we will make a funny face if we get eye contact and if she lands a big move in front of me I will scream wow, and then try to also land some moves that will make her shout wow back. In the end, in freestyle you can only focus on your own sailing – that is the only thing we can control. In general, I am only focusing on myself in the heat, trying to sail smart and catch the best gusts. In slalom it´s different. We had a funny moment in a race in Denmark where we were super close in the front at the first mark. I looked at her, she looked at me and for a split second we were like “How are we going do this, who is going to gybe first??” ha-ha! I trained with her the last year and I know she is a few knots faster than anyone else, so we sailed safe and I got 2nd after Sarah´s first place. It was a golden moment for both of us. If there would have been another sailor at that moment I would have risked harder at the first mark as I know I have the same or faster speed than the other girls, but at this point, no one is as fast as SQ so it was an easy calculation!

WS: Do you like competing or do you prefer having fun free sailing?

OB: I am very competitive, and I know I need it in my life. But my favourite thing is to go on trips and train new moves and make videos. I like fun projects where you mix creativity with windsurfing. I also surround myself with a bunch of great people who are super motivated to improve in windsurfing. Nothing is like landing a new move you been training for. At the same time, ending a contest on the podium is also great, but only if I sailed well and had sick conditions.

WS: What have you two been doing on Aruba?

OB: First weeks everything was open here. Again, we hype each other up so in one day we could go windsurfing, kiting and end the day with a tennis training with Sarah´s tennis coach. The day after could start with 8AM CrossFit session, breakfast in town before a freestyle, slalom or foil session. In the evening we would drive to Boca to kite. If the wind was too light we would drive around the island listening to great music while singing illegally loud! During each day we will make sure to get my daily amount of chocolate while SQ would finish a whole bag of grapes. In between everything we both make sure to get some “office” hours to work and finish different projects. We always seem to have some projects going on. Making Lovely Holiday videos, preparing future windsurfing clinics and so on!

WS: Do you miss the travel right now?

OB: At this point I am just very happy I am able to windsurf, and that the forecast is great! I don´t want to miss these sessions here on Aruba, so yes, happy I am here to focus on pure training and not booking flight tickets non-stop. That said I do hope we get to compete this year!

WS: When did the idea for the lovely holidays video come about?

OB: Around 1.5 years ago!

WS: Are they hard work to make and how much fun are they?

OB: We have been through different type of videos now. It´s not hard work, just because it is our own idea, and we don´t have anyone who tells us what to do. We do whatever we want to do and this are our projects for ourselves, so then it does not feel like hard work. We also laugh a lot! Just because the videos and the ideas are, just ridiculous. I thought it would be harder to “book all the male models” but they were all very helpful and said yes straight. That said, we are business-women. We did not always tell them upfront what they needed to do!

WS: Who comes up with the ideas?

OB: I would say we both have the ideas. I maybe sometimes start with one idea, and then when SQ starts to think about it her mind is an idea machine. Together we make a plan and find a film crew who can help us get it done.

WS: Where will be the next lovely holiday destination?

OB: The plan is to make one from Aruba! After that, we have to see what the Corona situation will be and see which trips we will end up doing this year.

WS: Have you improved a lot sailing with Sarah everyday?

OB: I am feeling a lot of improvement. We have had great conditions last days and everything feels more effortless and I can put more power and hight into my moves. Sailing with SQ is great. She is sailing well during contests but even more impressive at free sailing. In windsurfing, we don’t have a coach, so it feels great to be a member of the Lovely Holiday training camps. There is a lot of communication going on through the sessions and in general just a lot of help being pushed by the best. We do film a lot also and in the evening we watch and analyze everything to get better and prepared for the next session.

WS: What did you do before windsurfing?

OB: I studied at the Norwegian School of Sports Science and I played professional handball in Norway until I was 21 years old. After that windsurfing stole my heart, and I followed my dream living as a windsurfer. How I made it happen is still unreal, but I am forever grateful for the opportunity and all the sponsors believing in me. It has been a dream and that is why I also make sure to go ‘all in’ in this sport and try to learn as much as possible. I don´t like to waste my time!

WS: What are your other passions aside from windsurfing?

OB: It used to be handball, now it is CrossFit, running, kiting, mountain bike, climbing, bowl skating and skiing but nothing beats windsurfing: Freestyle, wave, slalom, and foil, those are still my first favourite sports.

WS: What would be your idea of the perfect windsurf session?

OB: Severne freek 4.0 or 4.4 and my Starboard iGnite 87L and 25-30 knots. Shoulder to head high ramps and flat in-between the waves. So, jumping on the way out and freestyling on the way in between the waves. Those are my favourite conditions.

WS: Do you miss not being at events and do you think you will be back competing this season?

OB: I miss seeing everyone and compete in wild conditions. That´s a great time to create memories and great stories… But at this point the world situation and people´s health is more important than windsurfing. I am sure we will be back competing as soon as the world is ready for it! I stay positive and hopefully we can compete this year!

WS: what are your ambitions with windsurfing?

OB: All my goals are pretty detailed. I want to land certain moves, I want to finish more slalom events on the podium. My everyday ambition in windsurfing is to make the best out of every session. I try to always have a plan for what I want to improve and I keep trying until I make it. Somethings I learn fast and some things feel like it takes forever! If I learn something new, I am stoked, until the next session. Then I am on a new mission trying to learn something else. The goal is to progress, and that is, in the end, the only feeling that makes me really deeply happy. I could maybe finish on the podium not improving for a whole year, but I would not be happy. Progress is the ultimate happiness in windsurfing for me and I guess that´s where the biggest motivations are. Never be stuck in one place – keep moving!

WS: what do you love about windsurfing?

OB: The places windsurfing takes me to and the people I meet are great things about windsurfing! If I get strong wind and at the same time feeling progress in my sailing, I am happy! If I come off the water with a new skill you will see me smiling! If I come back from a session not saying much it´s probably because I did not feel any progress or I ducked or crashed my sail too many times in the water!

#Windsurf BEN PROFFITT: THE BUCKET LIST!

BEN PROFFITT: THE BUCKET LIST!

RES DY7_D1_5802

We hand over the Bucket list debate to the voice of windsurfing himself, Mr Ben Proffitt, for the items he would like to tick off his personal and windsurf to do list!

Photos: John Carter and PWA/ Carter

WAVES: My main one would be Jaws! I have to sail Jaws! It will probably be me on the shoulder just cruising down the wave but that would be enough. When I first went to Maui and watched it break the noise put me off a bit! I am not really a big wave sailor. But it feels like that is one place I should sail. I have not been to Chile yet either and I see some amazing locations down there. Peru also looks sick and I have a few friends over there who have shown me videos of some killer spots up north. Taranaki in New Zealand also is one on my list. I went to New Zealand quite a few times with the Olympics, but I never got to sail there. I am not really into those waves of high consequence of rocks and shallow reefs. I kind of like the head to logo high smackable fun waves, so Baja also appeals to me. I know this is a long list, but I started watching videos when I started windsurfing at 9 and I am 42 now! In my teens all the videos I was watching were from the Gorge and I just have to go there as well! I will go there at some point. I will still be here for a few years to tick a few off. Oh yes Diamond Head as well on Oahu, that looks pretty sick and it is port tack.

MOVES: When I was training super hard and I was pushing to make the top five in the world in waves. I started landing clean doubles and push forwards before injuring myself. That was about seven years ago. Then I had a run of five years with niggling injuries. I would love to get back to landing consistent double loops. I have lost the bottle, I wont lie! I have been coaching people to forward loop and I can still do full planing loops with my eyes closed. So, I should be able to do doubles. As for push forwards, you really need the right conditions and you need to be pumped up. I would also like to learn a few freestyle moves but I might be getting a bit old for it. The Culo is a pretty cool move as well as the shifty. I had a go at a shifty but that didn’t go very well. I am still pumped to learn new moves. I would also like to improve my wave sailing…it sounds boring but just being able to do a late crack is an art in itself. That is what I get the most enjoyment from, especially as I have now moved to Portugal.

TITLES: I would love to win our fantasy football league. We have a windsurfing group that do this league and it is very competitive. I am not so motivated anymore as a professional windsurfer as I think I am past my best on the PWA after all the injuries. I still would like to win the Tiree Wave Classic again as that has been one of my contests over the years. I really enjoy it up there and I love the place. I would like to achieve something in slalom also. I am sailing slalom gear a bit more now and am enjoying it. I have always been into racing and started my career in that department. I am not made for slalom but I am enjoying it. I would maybe like to race in some national races just for fun. Its tough because the big boys are faster and there is nothing a guy my size can do about that unless they do weight divisions!

CRAZY STUFF: I am so locked into what I am doing right now I really need to think of some of these other things in life. I have moved to Portugal this year and that has been my focus. I am 42 and this is the first house I have ever bought. This house has taken up a lot of my goals but I am enjoying it. We have the dogs, a good local scene and great waves. I am enjoying building that up. So I guess that is one of my goals, to live a normal life. I have lived a crazy life in the past with all the travel so living in one place is quite nice.

CONCERTS: I would like to go and see a big gig. When I was young I always listed to Guns and Roses so that would be a band I would like to see. To go and see a big band like that pumping out the classics I would love it!

MOUNTAIN BIKE AND GOLF: I am quite into my mountain biking so there are a few challenges I would like to do. There are a few big black runs to do out there I would like to tick off. In golf I would love to improve. Now I am in Portugal, I would love to play a bit more and that one thing I would love is a hole in one! I have been close a few times plus I have hit an eagle before which is a two on a par four but the hole is one still eludes me!

ELITE WINDSURFING CLUB: We came up with this list at windsurfing TV, of things in windsurfing to join the elite windsurfing club. This list started with winning a world cup, going over 50 knots, Landing a double, landing a push forward, landing a goiter, a shaka and a wave 360. I ticked them all off and I thought I was the only person on the list and then they added Jaws. So that is definitely something to think about. We thought it would be a cool thing in honour of Peter Volwater. So I need that Jaws tick on my Bucket list.

50 KNOTS: I would love to go back to Luderitz and make that whole run at 50 knots! I hit a fifty peak but to do it over the whole 500 metre course is super hard. It might be impossible for me but I would like to give that a proper go when I am at full fitness!

MAX ROWE: INTERVIEWED

BN19_fs_K20_0356

Windsurf talk to Max Rowe: one of the UK’s most successful freestylers, as well as expert Club Vass instructor and more recently a dad, for his update on what is happening in Austria right now:

Photos: John Carter and PWA/ Carter

WS: Where are you right now and how is life for you at home during the crises??

MR: I’m in Salzburg, Austria and we feel pretty fortunate that our “lockdown” hasn’t been as strict as a lot of Europe whilst also being very effective in flattening the curve. We have been able to get out and about for exercise and drive for the occasional hike without the fear of being shamed by strangers on FB or ending up on the front page of the Daily Mail!

WS: We heard you are a dad now…congratulations? Tell us how that is working out so far with Lola?

MR: Thank you very much! Things are going great with Lola, she’s healthy, happy most of the time and even sleeping occasionally at night so we’re just very grateful for that! Of course, it has been the perfect distraction from everything that’s going on at the moment and I’m so relieved my family made it over here to meet her before the crises really kicked off.

WS: What have you been doing since the lock down started?

MR: Changing nappies!

WS: How much are you missing windsurfing?

MR: A lot actually and especially windsurfing in Vass with the crew out there! Because of the pregnancy we were in Austria for bit longer this year, so it feels like ages since I’ve had a good run of time on the water. I was very fortunate to get out for a very brief session here yesterday on some borrowed gear and it was so nice to get that feeling back.

WS: What is happening with Club Vass at the moment?

MR: Well it all seems a bit up in the air really until there’s some definitive word from the government as to what the travel restrictions will look like this summer.

WS: Were you planning to be there this summer?

MR: Yes of course! We would have been looking to drive down this week or next.

WS: Do you keep in touch with all the Cub Vass crew?

MR: Yeah we are in touch quite a lot. We all love it out there, so everyone’s pretty gutted at the moment with the current situation.

WS: Do you think you will be competing again this season?

MR: I seriously doubt it. To be honest, it was looking unlikely before this crisis kicked off! I’ve been on the tour for 10 years now and I must of only missed two or three events in that time so I feel very content with the run I’ve had at it and with the incredible support I’ve received during that time. Saying that, if there was an event that came up in Bonaire or somewhere as exciting as that I’d definitely be ‘doing my all’ to get a wildcard so I’m not really retiring from competition as such, but I’m looking for some new challenges and events that excite me rather than going back to the same locations all the time.

WS: Can you tell us how you are keeping fit and mentally strong during the last month?

MR: I’ve got a new-found love for road biking which has been great for keeping fit. Mentally, well every day’s different but I think having the focus on Lola has really helped me to see things for the bigger picture in life and help keep me positively moving forward to do the best I can for her.

WS: Why do you love windsurfing?

MR: I love how content it makes me feel and of course the post session beers after a good session!

#Windsurf VICTOR FERNANDEZ: INTERVIEWED

VICTOR FERNANDEZ: INTERVIEWED

JC_F19_Day8_D2_6870

We continue with our reports from around the world on how sailors are surviving and keeping busy during the Corona epidemic and it is over to Maui, Hawaii for this catch up with former PWA wave champion Victor Fernandez!

Photos: PWA/ Carter and Fanatic/ Carter

WS: Tell us how the Corona situation has disrupted your season so far?

VF: Well, I came to Maui with the family on March 3rd, just when it was starting in Europe to get bad and we thought about coming back but now with our baby of 4 months it is not so easy to travel and specially with this virus through the US (big airports, planes) is not ideal so we decided to extend our stay here until May 30th to wait and see if things get better in Spain.

WS: Are you stuck in Maui or are you preferring to stay there?

VF: We could have gone back but we decided to be here as we are lock down too but not so strict  and we are allow to go to the water every day which is actually why we come to Maui and it is my job and passion too.

WS: Are you still windsurfing?

VF: Yes, the Hawaii Governor wants people to keep doing sports but no groups, keeping big distances and just from the car to the water, water- car and back home.

WS: What is the vibe like at the beach or do you just go sail and go home?

VF: We go Windsurfing, surfing, Sup or swimming with Kona (our son) almost every day. We just look at the forecast and we decide which spot to go.

WS: How are you enjoying being a dad?

VF: It is great, but it is also hard sometimes! Every dad knows about it, I guess. But it is amazing to see your son interact more and more with us and I love it. The sleeping time is just not the same as before, but we are getting used to it.

WS: What does it feel like being a wave sailor and not knowing if and when there will be any events?

VF: Well, it is not easy but I just think that it is a moment to think that it is a very hard time for many people right now and if we don’t have events at the moment it is for a reason! Staying safe and healthy it is the most important, so events will come sooner or later and we have to be positive in these times to don’t create more negativity around us, because there is no need for it, we have enough going on.

WS: How are you staying fit?

VF: Training at home, eating healthy and windsurfing and surfing a lot.

WS: How are you keeping your head together mentally?

VF: I think having a kid right now helps because time flies with him so I windsurf and then we do things with him, such as swimming, singing baby songs, ha-ha…changing diapers, listening to music, cooking, etc…so there is no time to get bored.

WS: Are you in touch with the other members of the team?

VF: Yes, Marc Paré, Adam Lewis and Arthur Arutkin are here too so It is great to sail with them. We are testing some sails together, trying fins and pushing each other in the water.

WS: Do you think you will compete again this season?

VF: I always stay positive and I think maybe Denmark and Sylt would happen, for Canary Islands is not looking so good as summer is around the corner and things are not improving yet.

WS: How has the shutdown affected your testing / training schedule?

VF: It has affected the development especially as we cannot receive new protos from Sri Lanka and boards from Portugal at the moment but Kai is going to do some sail prototypes at home on Maui so we can still move forward.

WS: What was the highlight your 2019 season? My trip to Cape Verde on February 2019 was amazing. We had a lot of good swells in three weeks and I still have some of those amazing rides on my mind.

WS: Why do you love windsurfing?

VF: It is more than a sport. It is a passion that I share with so many people, friends, and family. It gives me unique feelings.

WS: What are your words to live by?

VF: As a good friend said on our last Windsurfing Movie (Andre Paskowski), Do not be too hard on yourself, be nice to one another and enjoy every moment in life.
