WSL Surf 101: Judging Criteria

In this episode of WSL Surf 101, we're going to break down what the Championship Tour judges are looking for when it comes to scoring a complete wave. In a competitive round a panel of 5 judges score each wave on a scale of 1-to-10. For every scoring ride, the highest and lowest judged scores fall off, and the surfer receives the average of the remaining three scores. In any round, a surfer is looking to lock in their two highest-scoring waves. The top single wave score is a 10, for a possible 20-point heat total. Judges analyze the following elements when scoring waves: Commitment and degree of difficulty, innovative and progressive maneuvers, combination of major maneuvers, variety of maneuvers and speed, power and flow. WSL Surf 101: The Floater

In this episode of WSL Surf 101, we're going to look at a foundational move for every surfer, the floater. This is a means of negotiating a section, surfing over the top of a breaking wave as it crashes down in front of you. The key to a floater is to lighten up your body as you glide across the falling section of water. Then, at the critical time, you compress and prepare to ride out of the turbulent white water to safety. Judges are looking for size and progression when it comes to floaters. Is the section you float over critical? Is there style or an aggressive angle to the floater? Can you ride away clean from the free fall? And, of course, floaters can have consequences, too. Boards and bones can easily be broken in the impact zone. WSL Surf 101: Best Maneuver

We break down the building block to any surf highlight reel, the Best Maneuver. Often on the Championship Tour, this means air time. The top surfers know that the biggest scores and loudest cheers from the beach come from punting big airs. Barrels and critical turns are loved as well, but nothing gets fans more excited than taking flight. Blasting a huge air anywhere on a wave takes skill, nerves of steel and equal parts body and board control. And to really get the fans' attention a full rotation -- where you land with your nose pointing directly at the beach -- is the maneuver to master. When it comes to judging these maneuvers, judges are looking for size and progression - the higher, more stylish and critical the air the better. WSL Surf 101: Wildcards

In this episode of WSL Surf 101, we're going to look at the great disruptors on Tour, the wildcards. On the Championship Tour, wildcard surfers are those that get an invitation to compete against the world's best at a particular event. Wildcards are given entry into competition because of their skill, knowledge and past performances at a venue, or a win at a local trials competition. A wildcard's goal is to win heats and disrupt the top power brokers on Tour. Wildcards are judged with the same criteria as full-time Tour surfers, and the standards of speed, power and flow apply to these spot specialists. More often than not, a wildcard is pitted against a top seed in competition and will have to earn the right to stay in the draw.
